WEST OF THE HORIZON

I visited the Algarve for the first time when reports began to appear in the media that Czech President Václav Havel had bought a villa there. I couldn’t imagine him lying for days on end on the beach, sipping cocktails and partying the evenings away. This well-known holiday region of Portugal just didn’t seem right for him so one day I set off to find his villa. I found it in a quiet, remote little village with the poetic name „Eyes of Water“ (Olhos de Água). Not far from the beach spring water trickled from round fountains, creating small reservoirs in which the wives of local fishermen used to do their washing. It may have been this place that opened my eyes – thanks to this I began to notice the often hidden and inconspicuous beauty the Algarve possesses…
