I came across Michal Josephy’s work via the Social Media platform (Facebook). Sometimes you see work that digs deep into you and forces you to strip away all you know and look at the world through a lens belonging to someone else’s eyes. Michal’s lens is unobstructed by subjectivity. His anthropological background allows him to see the true nature in humanity. Michal is not simply a photographer though – the way he sees the world – the way he embodies empathy and objectivity all at once is mesmerizing. Every image has this uncanny distinction that allows him to have a range so broad, so unpredictable, it’s refreshing.

While he has photographed for the globally recognized National Geographic, he has also been actively instrumental in working closely on projects for UNICEF. Recounting the moments in time that have marked this world in some way, he has caught it on camera. After interviewing him, the feelings of adoration for his work only grow. While he utilizes his ability to capture images, he also has the remarkable gift of words. He can tell a story, paint the picture in a way that is simply raw and organic, and in essence, he creates work that changes the outcome of others. It is artistically empowering to come across such a photographer and even more magnetic that he uses his art to educate the world with a thought-provoking, empathetic, and curiosity-provoking approach. There is stillness AND breadth to his work.

That is a gift that is essential in this wonderfully chaotic world.

My Interview with a Photographer and Humanitarian

When you look through your lens, do you let go of everything?

Not really. It depends on the need of a conscious involvement in a concrete situation. There are so many ways of seeing through the lens: concentrated documentary, capturing commonly invisible aspects, eye-touching empathy, insight … and so on … I like to observe – that´s the work of an anthropologist – in a form of “participant observation“ or “observing participation“ , so photography is a suitable medium for doing visual anthropology. Besides, I like the image in general: it could be painting or Imagism, poetry  style founded by Ezra Pound … I do see image as a substantial eidetic form, a typical likeness of being, which has the same basis as Plato´s  idea, i.e. eidos. That way, you can  see life as its own designer.

What are you most passionate about?

I suppose “passion” is a part of my general  motivation and a creative drive force: I cannot do anything without a stronger “excitement” or emotion above an average perception threshold. Otherwise, it makes me inactive, lazy and apathetic. Nevertheless, as you know,  passion – derivative of Latin–  has the other side of its  meaning and manifestation…

If you could go back in time and photograph any historical figure or moment, who or what would it be and why?

Vasco da Gama and his first discovery voyage, when he had circumnavigated Cape of Good Hope and reached India (1498). I´m fascinated by a history of the Portuguese Maritime Empire and a global success of a tiny, poor, handicapped country strip, which was pushed aside as a western finis terrace of an old European continent.

How old were you when you first picked up a camera?

I don’t remember how old. But – it didn’t happen [loving it].  A camera was imposed on me by my father, together with a mentoring of lectures about aperture, depth of field … and I hated it.  Since then, I slowly and cautiously built up my relationship.

What is your favorite sound?

Ocean flow…

What is your favorite taste?

A Taste of Dawn?  Taste of Darwin – to be more precise. It´s only two letters difference, but my taste and what I like  is  “genetically encoded” as a part of natural and sexual selection. So, my favorite taste is somewhere between Bitter Sweet Symphony and Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

If you could use one word to describe the world, what would it be?

Indescribable.

What song makes your heart happy?

I used to listen to Riders On The Storm by The Doors, so when I have to find a safe and calm harbor – OR maybe So Nice by Bebel Gilberto – that would be so nice.

Staged or spontaneous?

Ordering chaos.

What are you afraid of?

Phobias & helplessness.

What can you not live without?

Breath. Definitely.

What city would you most want to travel to?

In accordance with the previous answer, it has to be Buenos Aires. Pleasant and thrilling combination of good fresh air, wine, Asado and beef steaks, colonial architecture, Jorge Luis Borges, and tango.

If you could exhibit in any gallery in the world, what gallery would you choose?

I´ve never thought about it.  I like  rather the adventurous process of picture making by itself then ex post showing, presenting and talking with a glass of wine and canapés.  I have an experience for example from Karlovy Vary International Film Festival 2011, where we had, as “photobloggers of newspaper” [idnes.cz], the exhibition. Nevertheless, from a visitor´s point of view, MoMA is definitely cool.

Do you believe in destiny or choice?

I believe in destiny´s choice and chance for change.

What is your favorite cocktail? Wine? Beer? Food?

I  do not have any favorites. My taste selection is an updating digest from a blend of situation, mood, and social context, so it´s quite variable. Anyway, I’m still discovering that field, especially the aesthetics of food and it’s connection to a taste as an evolutionary adaptation, cultural diversity, and tradition. With regard to that, we did – with my colleague Dulique (Anna Bednarikova)– the photoeditorial La Dolce Vita, when we combine real street life photography of different cultures with its typical sweets on a base of a likeness of some visual patterns (http://www.protisedi.cz/article/dolce-vita ). I also try to follow work of some our food-bloggers, for example Lenka Pozarova, and I´m very glad to have a personal fitted wine  book selection from Senta Cermakova, Director of Director of Worldwide Customer Reference Program of Hewlett Packard. And last, but not least, I´m freshly exploring A Taste of Dawn…

ARTIST BIO

Michal Josephy, anthropologist and travel photographer/reporter, is finishing his Ph.D. degree. He is especially interested in anthropology and aesthetics of post-modern society. He feels a compelling bond with the history of a Portuguese maritime empire. As a photographer, he focuses on a visual anthropology,  street and documentary photography, with an intention to vividly portray everyday life, social, and cultural issues. His articles and  photographs have appeared in numerous magazines including  National Geographic and Geo, he has also participated in visual communication projects of Unicef Mozambique.
